I found this book to be interesting with the characters being down to earth and believable. It is mostly told from the perspective of thirteen year old Jocie, daughter of a newspaper/preacher/pastor. Hollyhill is a small southern town , where everybody knows everything about everyone. Jocie knows every body in town and is known by all. She had a momma who was tired of being held down by a man she didn’t love and children she didn’t want. The only thing she did want was to be gone. She left in the middle of the night, when Jocie was only five, taking the older thirteen year old daughter with her. David, often wondered why she took one daughter and left the younger. He does his best to instill the ways of the Lord in Jocie, as does his maiden aunt who lives with them. She is becoming very forgetful in all ways but the memory of the scriptures. There are many ups and downs about their life in Hollyhill which makes for a very interesting interesting read with a few surprising twists, especially when the elder daughter returns after being in California for nine years with her big surprise. David is steadfast in his trust in the Lord and trusts him to take care of all the “surprises” and He does…….
