This is a very interesting well written book with very believable characters. Gilbert surely has a way of bringing her characters to life. You feel you are right there with them. Freydis is a product of her upbringing. The illegitimate “forest child” of Eirik the Red who was mistreated and made fun of by her brothers, she feels she must prove herself worthy to be his daughter. She is as fierce as any male viking. Although she is married, her husband Ref is subject to her anger and compulsion to prove herself as fierce and worthy as any viking would be. She cannot show love or gentleness, even to her own child. There is so much depth to this book, a very intense novel. You will love the history and also the ending. The Forest child finds true love in the creator and this changes her whole outlook on life and others. She learns to forgive, which was very hard for her to do, but oh how this changes everything for her. What a beautiful ending. Heather says this is the last book on Vikings, but I hope she reconsiders and gives us more about this era and great people .I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. I was honored to read and review.
